Topic: Biotic and Abiotic components

Whether the statement "Dead plants & animals are abiotic components" is true or false.

Re: Biotic and Abiotic components

Yes technically it's true. As they are dead there is no life activities found in them. So the dead bodies of plant and animals are as good as complex chemical composition. In short they don't show any signs of life. So they can be considered abiotic components. However referring a plant or animal as dead is tricky. Suppose an animal dies or leaf is cut from plant, still enzyme activities are ongoing for significant time. Due to lack of resistance it may further attacked by microbes and finally are decomposited to soil minerals and environmental gases. Hope its useful to you Saumya.
