Is it distance or altitude you mean to say?

I am confused...

To measure the height of a place (ALTITUDE) from Mean Sea Level (MSL) the instrument called as BAROMETER is used.
It is used to measure atmospheric pressure.
As we know, the atmosphere gets diluted as we go away (up)  from the earth surface (MSL).
Due to this the atmospheric pressure also decreases with increase in height from the MSL. Barometer is used to measure the pressure and hence the altitude.

A small doubt...

Will the barometric method of measuring an altitude of a place be sufficiently accurate with today's standards? Because there will always be a some variation in the air pressure. Inspite of this, the altitudes expressed are generally to the nearest 'meter'. How much accurate are these figures?

I am little confused...
